HRD just completed a sixth mission into Hurricane Sandy to continue to gather Doppler radar and other data for assimilation into numerical models. The P3 completed three passes through the center of Sandy.

The G-IV is scheduled to fly a synoptic surveillance mission this afternoon, with a takeoff time of 1730 UTC (1:30pm EDT) from MacDill AFB and recover back there. The G-IV will circumnavigate Sandy. Here’s their track. The dots represent the GPS dropsonde launch locations.

The fifth mission into Hurricane Sandy will take off around 4pm Eastern 27 October. The plan is to continue to gather Doppler radar and other data for assimilation into numerical models. The P3 will perform a rotated figure-4 pattern before returning to base around 8 h after takeoff.
