More than 20 years after the first teacher adopted a drifter, NOAA’s Adopt a Drifter Program , co-led by the Global Ocean Monitoring and Observing Program (GOMO) and the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML), continues to grow and evolve this summer.

Program updates:

Through collaboration with NOAA’s Teacher at Sea Program, ADP is recruiting more alumni for the program and teachers are starting to deploy drifters as part of the 2026 field season.

ADP recently launched activities and updated lessons on a refreshed teacher resources web page

The program’s NOAA Lapenta intern, Virginia St. Clair, is creating new tools for educators and students to understand and engage with drifters.

ADP team members will share about the program at a national conference for the first time.
