Safety First – HRD Aviation Water Safety Training

Last month, several HRDers participated in Aviation Water Safety Training. This hands- on training is required every 5 years in order to participate in hurricane research flight missions according to NOAA Aviation Safety Policy.  The two-day classroom and pool course, taught by FAA safety certified trainers, covered topics on the physiological effects on the human body while flying, post crash survival skills, personal survival kits, survival shelter and signaling.

In the pool, HRDers learned about the Winslow life raft, survival swimming techniques, how to use a HEEDS bottle and evacuation skills on the Shallow Water Egress Trainer (SWET) chair.  Lastly, the cold weather safety immersion suit was available to try on. Every participant donned the suit and noticed how easily they can float and keep warm in it.
