This paper summarizes the Tenth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones (IWTC-10), sponsored by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The workshop brings together forecasters and researchers from countries around the world that are impacted by tropical cyclones (TCs) with the purpose of discussing the latest research and forecast advances and sharing best practices to improve TC forecasts globally.

his paper provides a summary of IWTC-10, which occurred from 5-9 December, 2022, in Bali, Indonesia. The workshop continued the goal of the original IWTC, held in 1985 in Bangkok, Thailand, to bring together forecasters and researchers from countries around the world that are impacted by TCs to discuss the latest research and forecast advances and share best practices to improve forecasts and their usefulness globally. The workshops have continued as a regular feature of WMO efforts to encourage the advancement of TC forecasting and improve ways of communicating TC hazards to the general public. The theme of this workshop was “Improved TC science and services for better decision-making,” reflecting the growing need to improve everything from collection of observations and production of forecasts to effective communication of warnings and responsible actions taken by decision-makers.
■ Important Conclusions:
- In-depth discussions, involving more than 500 researchers and forecasters from around the world both in-person and online, occurred across a variety of topics affecting TC hazards and impacts. These were intended to improve forecasts and decision-making in response to TC threats.
- Twenty-two recommendations for researchers, forecasters, and the WMO were discussed, debated, and proposed as an outcome of the workshop.
- A set of articles summarizing research and forecasting advances are being published as a result of the workshop, and the presentations and recordings are archived online at https://community.wmo.int/en/meetings/tenth-international-workshop-tropical-cyclones-iwtc-10.
