NOAA’s G-IV completes first mission from Cabo Verde Islands

The Saharan Air Layer as viewed from NOAA’s G-IV jet over the Atlantic Ocean.

On August 9, 2022, NOAA’s G-IV jet “Gonzo” completed its first ever mission from the Cabo Verde Islands in the eastern Atlantic. The mission was part of the Impact of Targeted Observations on Forecasts-East (ITOFs-East) project, which seeks to examine African Easterly Waves as they move off the western African coast over the tropical Atlantic Ocean and interact with the Saharan Air Layer.
