Drs. Robert Rogers and Xuejin Zhang attended the HWRF tutorial and workshop in Boulder, CO from 26-29 April (http://www.dtcenter.org/HurrWRF/hurricane_tutorial_2011.php) . Dr. Rogers gave an invited presentation on “Observations of hurricanes for improving numerical models” and Dr. Zhang gave a presentation on “HWRF Nesting and Nest Moving” and was one of the instructors for HWRF part of the tutorial. While in Boulder Dr. Rogers met with hurricane researchers from NCAR to discuss potential collaborations using HRD observational data sets to evaluate model performance. Dr. Zhang met with scientists from EMC to discuss the HWRF code management, worked on the vortex initialization for the third nest, and finalized the EMC/HRD joint resource request on t-jet. Dr. Zhang also met with software engineers from DTC to discuss the possibility to parallelize the EnKF code on t-jet.
