AOML Scientists Provide An Outlook for Potential Hurricane Research Flights

Today Hurricane scientists turned their attention to the area of storms in the tropical Atlantic, named Invest 95L.  They have tentatively planned to send the high-altitude jet Gulfstream-IV (G-IV) to St. Croix on Sunday, September 13 to begin sampling Invest 95L on Monday, September 14. Their provisional plan includes collecting measurements that address questions posed at the beginning of the 2020 hurricane season.

Experiments AOML scientists would like to perform are documented prior to the hurricane season.  Research goals for the G-IV mission include validating satellite data in a hurricane environment and measuring steering flow around the storm to understand how observations can improve hurricane track forecasts.

NOAA’s National Hurricane Center 5-day Outlook

AOML scientists meet frequently, often multiple times per day, to evaluate the current state of the atmosphere for opportunities to conduct research.  These meetings include daily map discussions, led this week by Levi Cowan, PhD, a scientist with the University of Miami’s Cooperative Institute for Marine & Atmospheric Studies.

The enhanced activity in the Atlantic was the main topic of interest in meetings this week.  Cowan’s discussions greatly assisted scientists in choosing potential systems to target research.
