Ian Smith joined AOML’s Ocean Chemistry and Ecosystems Division as a University of Miami-Cooperative Institute research scientist. He has participated in multiple cruises aboard the R/V Walton Smith for the Integrated Ecosystem Assessment program conducting regular interdisciplinary observations of the Gulf of Mexico and south Florida coastal waters. The water quality sampling conducted on these cruises is used to create a comprehensive and long-term dataset which is critical for assessing the regional circulation, salinity and water quality of the sensitive marine habitats found in these regions. Additionally, Ian has participated in the South Florida Ecosystem Restoration juvenile sportfish project investigating how juvenile sportfish in Florida Bay respond to changes in water quality and habitat. Each year for six months, samples of juvenile sportfish populations, along with water quality and seagrass measurements are taken in the Florida Bay.
