Dr. Lidia Cucurull, Supervisory Physical Scientist with NOAA’s Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory, has been appointed the NOAA lead for Goal 2 of the NASA-NOAA Modeling Collaboration. The goals of the Collaboration are to coordinate and focus initiatives and establish a mechanism to transfer important research to operations for Earth Science (including weather) and Space Weather Modeling at both agencies. Goal 2 is specifically to facilitate joint studies between NOAA and NASA on the impact of observations.
Many new observations are now, or will soon be available, to assimilate into numerical forecasts. These include PACE (Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem) observations, and data from the Meteorological Operational Satellite – Second Generation (MetOp-SG) series of satellites to be launched by the European Space Agency and European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT) between 2023 and 2037. To optimize use of these new observations, scientists will conduct Observing System Experiments (OSEs) and Observing System Simulation Experiments (OSSEs) to test their impact on current forecast models.
