Hurricane Field Program Update – Wednesday, September 26, 2018, 9 AM ET

HRD has tasked the NOAA P-3 for tropical cyclone genesis research missions in the East Pacific, to/from Liberia, Costa Rica, beginning today.

Wednesday, September 26, 2018

NOAA42: The P-3 will fly a research mission into the East Pacific to survey a potential genesis region, including the Papagayo Gap wind flow. Takeoff from Liberia, Costa Rica, will be at 10 AM local (12 PM EDT, 1600 UTC). 3 HRD scientists will be on this flight.  The goal is to capture processes related to the formation, or non-formation, of a tropical cyclone in the East Pacific. One aspect of this potential development is the impact of gap wind flows from the Papagayo and Tehuantepec Gap regions. The flight plan for the mission is shown below. The plan is to use dropsondes (that measure vertical profiles of pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind) at each of the green points to survey various aspects of the gap wind (easternmost, southeast to northwest oriented leg) and potential genesis region (westernmost, northwest to southeast oriented leg).

NOAA42: The P-3 will fly another research mission into the East Pacific to survey a potentially developing disturbance. Takeoff from Liberia, Costa Rica, will be at 7 AM local (9 AM EDT, 1300 UTC). 3 HRD scientists will be on this flight.

NOAA49: No flights scheduled.
