NOAA42:  The P-3 will fly a NOAA/NCEP/Environmental Modeling Center (EMC) operationally tasked mission into Tropical Storm Gordon, takeoff from Lakeland, FL this afternoon at 4:30 PM EDT. 3 HRD scientists will be on this mission. The P-3 will fly a lawnmower pattern ahead of the storm, followed by a butterfly pattern to measure the inner core. The goal is to collect wind data from a Doppler radar onboard, as well as vertical profiles of temperature, relative humidity, and wind from dropsondes in various parts of the storm — all data that will be assimilated into operational forecast models to help improve forecasts.

No HRD scientists will be on these missions, but will be processing radar data for EMC from the ground.
