Hurricane Field Program Update — Monday, August 26, 2019

NOAA42 is currently conducting an EMC-tasked mission into Tropical Storm Dorian.  The aircraft took off from Lakeland this afternoon a little late, and will soon recover in St. Croix.  Details of that mission can be found in yesterday’s update.

NOAA42 will conduct a second EMC-tasked mission into Tropical Storm Dorian tomorrow.  The aircraft will take off around 5pm local time (2100 UTC), and recover in Barbados about 8 hours later.  The mission will involve four passes through the center of the developing tropical storm. The goal of the mission is to obtain data in the core to improve model forecasts.

NOAA49 recently completed its first Synoptic Surveillance mission around Tropical Storm Dorian. A second mission is planned for tomorrow, during which the G-IV will perform two circumnavigations around Dorian to gather dropwindsonde data to improve model forecasts before potential impacts in the islands.  The G-IV will depart St. Croix at 1730 UTC and recover in Barbados about 8 hours later.  The proposed flight track is shown below.
