Monday, August 20, 2018:
NOAA42: The P3 is currently flying an NOAA/NCEP/Environmental Modeling Center (EMC)-tasked operational mission into Hurricane Lane in the Central Pacific, that took off from Honolulu, Hawai’i at 4 AM HST (10 AM EDT). Three HRD scientists are on board. The flight track for this mission is shown below. The P-3 will fly a butterfly pattern, and release dropsondes at each endpoint of the butterfly, and midpoint location inbound/outbound from the center of the storm. The goal is to collect wind data from a Doppler radar onboard, as well as vertical profiles of temperature, relative humidity, and wind in various parts of the storm — all data that will be assimilated into operational forecast models to help improve forecasts.
NOAA42: The P3 will fly another EMC-tasked operational mission into Hurricane Lane, with a takeoff from Honolulu, Hawai’i at 4 PM HST (10 PM EDT). Three HRD scientists will be on board.

NOAA49: The G-IV is currently flying a synoptic surveillance mission in support of the Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) around Hurricane Lane, that took off from Honolulu, Hawai’i at 7:30 AM HST (1:30 PM EDT). No HRD scientists are on board. The goal of the mission is to improve the representation of the steering flow around Hurricane Lane in the operational forecast models.
Tuesday, August 21, 2018:
NOAA42: The P3 will fly 2 additional EMC-tasked operational missions into Hurricane Lane, with takeoffs from Honolulu, Hawai’i at 4 AM and 4 PM HST (10 AM and 10 PM EDT). Three HRD scientists will be on board each mission.
NOAA49: The G-IV will fly an additional synoptic surveillance mission in support of CPHC around Hurricane Lane, with a takeoff from Honolulu, Hawai’i at 7:30 AM HST (1:30 PM EDT). No HRD scientists are on board.
