Optimization of the NOAA G-IV Surveillance Aircraft Flight Patterns through Observing System Simulation Experiments

Principal Investigators:

Project Members:

Funding Information:
  • This is an unfunded NOAA HRD-NHC Collaborative Hurricane Applications Requirement Team (CHART) project.

Objectives:
  • Investigate relative impact of G-IV dropsonde vs. Doppler wind observations for track and intensity
  • Identify optimal G-IV flight patterns to maximize the utility of dropsonde and Doppler wind observations in the absence and/or presence of other reconnaissance aircraft (e.g., NOAA P-3, Air Force Reserve C-130)
  • Investigate relative impact of G-IV data on track in global models vs. on track and intensity in regional models
