GDP Outreach Activities

The Global Drifter Program (GDP) works closely with various organizations around the world to promote public awareness and the increased use of drifting buoy data. Some of the leading GDP public outreach partners include:

Adopt A Drifter Program

Established in 2004, the Adopt a Drifter Program provides teachers with an educational opportunity to infuse ocean observing system data into their course curriculum. Partnering K-16 teachers from the United States with international educators, the Adopt a Drifter Program uses drifting buoys to link students and teachers. For lesson plans and educational activities, please visit the ADP Lesson Plan website.

International SeaKeepers Society

In conjunction with the International SeaKeepers Society, the Global Drifter Program is working with private vessel owners to deploy drifting buoys throughout the worlds oceans. The International SeaKeepers Society promotes oceanographic research, conservation, and education through direct involvement with the yachting community. Bridging the gap between vessel owners and scientists, SeaKeepers encourages drifter deployments that will enhance the Global Drifter Array.

OceanX

"OceanX and the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently forged a formal agreement to advance cutting-edge ocean exploration and scientific research that increases public understanding of the importance and value of the ocean."

OceanX To Collaborate With NOAA
by John Liang - February 20, 2020

The partnership is in line with OceanX's core mission to explore the ocean and bring it back to the world. To learn more about OceanX and their scientific research, media production and exploration vessel, OceanXplorer, please visit OceanX.org.

Semester At Sea

The MV World Odyssey is the Semester At Sea campus. Outfitted as a globe-exploring university, the MV World Odyssey is a living-learning community that provides a platform for discussion, coursework and deep connections all while traveling to new locations. During these voyages, the Semester At Sea and the Global Drifter Program have partnered to deploy drifters throughout the worlds oceans. To learn more aobut Semester At Sea and other programs they support, please visit them at semesteratsea.org, or contact the University Relations team.

Volvo Ocean Race

Since 1973, competitors aboard world class sailing vessels have circumnavigated the globe during the Volvo Ocean Race. Described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event, these vessels navigate 45,000 nautical miles of open ocean, through varying ocean conditions and weather. While competition is fierce and victory is the ultimate goal, these competitors are generating legacies greater than their performance on the water. Race coordinators and competitors have worked tirelessly to incorporate scientific advancements and increase oceanographic and atmospheric data acquisition. Through hull re-designs, to crew sampling, to the deployment of drifting buoys, the Volvo Ocean Race is more than just a race!
