SAMOC cruises

Since 2008, 41 South Atlantic SAMOC-related cruises have been conducted. These cruises are listed below (with links to cruise reports when available). In addition, 123 high-density XBT transects have been obtained between 2007-2014 in the South Atlantic.

Looking at an ocean of changes: Ocean warming and carbon sink
Research vessel RV MARIA S. MERIAN

The RV MARIA S. MERIAN left Cape Town, South Africa, on January 4, 2017 to undertake the first full-depth oceanographic section linking the southern tip of Africa to the South American continent with on board a team of more than 20 scientists from eight countries.

Focuses of the cruise are the inventory of the ocean’s uptake of carbon, heat and fresh-water as well as the related physical and biogechemical processes, including the role of the regional turbulent dynamics and their link with the global ocean circulation and climate changes.

The project, led by Drs. Johannes Karstensen, Toste Tonhua (both from GEOMAR Kiel, Germany) and Prof. Sabrina Speich (from LMD, Paris, France) is embedded in the international South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (SAMOC) program and the EU-funded AtlantOS H2020 project. It indeed realizes the first South Atlantic Moc Basin Array (SAMBA) section of the SAMOC international initiative. The scientific crew include a total of 12 researchers from Argentina, Brazil and South Africa. The data that will be acquired is seen as an important contribution to the international data collection for ocean and climate studies and serves to the GO-SHIP initiative.

The MSM60 expedition ends in Montevideo, Uruguay, at the beginning of February.
