About the Neil Armstrong

In May 2010, the Office of Naval Research selected the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution to operate one of two new research vessels. The research vessel Neil Armstrong was transferred to WHOI operation on September 23, 2015. This vessel is outfitted with a General Oceanics 8050, an autonomous instrument to measure pCO2 in the surface water and the overlaying atmosphere above it. The unique geographic areas that the ship will visit - the North Atlantic and Arctic Oceans - play a pivotal role in Earth's climate and will provide a unique data set that will further our understanding of the carbonate system in high latitude regions.
