Tropical Pacific Drifting Buoys M.S. Swenson / AOML, Miami

At the end of August there were 263 satellite-tracked drifting buoys, of which 80% had subsurface drogues intact, in operation for the WOCE/CLIVAR Surface Velocity Program in the tropical Pacific Ocean. The three major currents are all well-established with the currents in the eastern part of the basin remaining strong. SST anomalies at the end of the month are near normal in the equatorial strip.
