General Cruise Information; Underway SOMMA: Operations, Data Reduction and Quality Control; Surface Bottle Data General Cruise Information: Ship Ronald H. Brown Year 1998 Cruise name RB-98-04 (TAO) Leg 1 Date depart 10/13/98 Date arrive 11/15/98 Port depart Seattle Port arrive Panama Canal Chief scientist John Shanley pCO2 operator Esa Peltola pCO2 (responsible person) Robert Castle TCO2 (responsible person) Esa Peltola Chl (responsible person) Jason Masters O2 (responsible person) George Berberian Underway SOMMA (AOML-1) Operations, Data Reduction and Quality Control: Operations: 1. Oct 13: Departure from Seattle 2. Oct 14: Leakage in the acid line, salt bridge in the liquid level sensor 3. Oct 15: The printer had run out of paper and therefore the system had stopped during the night. The system had also stopped injecting acid. 4. Oct 16: The system became noisy and stopped at 7:21 5. Oct 17: The system became noisy and stopped at 8:51 6. Oct 19: The system became noisy and stopped at 3:46 The system bacame noisy and stopped at 6:02 7. Oct 20: The system did not inject acid, valve was checked and it was ok. The tubing was massaged. 8. Oct 22: The system became unstable at 3:00. The Malcosorb and ORBO tubing were changed. 9. Oct 23: The system did not calculate CRM values. 9. Oct 26: The system stopped at 13:54: out of (floppy) disk space. 10. Oct 29: At 21:53 the system did not have a proper water flow: all the water connectors were changed to the all-the-time-open ones. The valve #4 failed and it was changed to a new one. The acid did not drip: tubing was massaged. The sampling was continued at 22:55. 11. Oct 30: The program did not record salinities. The computer was restarted and error on line 260 appeared. The TCT.ini file was empty. A backup file was copied on the computer and the program was restarted. The program did still not record salinities. The program was stopped and option #19 was run. This procedure filled salinity cell with seawater and read the salinity values. The sampling was restarted and the program recorded the salinity values. 12. Nov 2: At 16:27 Deltech trap was cleaned and the filter was changed. 13. Nov 4: The program does not calculate CRM values. 14. Nov 6: The program had stopped at 8:40. The printer was out of paper. 15. Nov 9: The pipette did not get full: the liquid level sensor was cleaned. 16. Nov 12: The coulometer hang up at 3:37. The program did not calculate CRM values at 14:46 17. Nov 14: The system was stopped at 1:45. Arrival to Panama Canal. Data Reduction and Quality Control: 1. Gas calibration was not run during part of the cruise, because the gas loop agreement was so poor. 2. The TSG salinities were unstable and therefore no salinity correction was applied to the samples. 3. LAT and LONG were merged. 4. CRM correction: Batch #43 Average: 1989.35 Stdev: 1.29 Number of standards: 12 Certified Value: 1988.64 Correction: -1.30 5. Quality control: The following plots were created and used to evaluate the data: TCO2 vs. Julian Time TCO2 vs. LAT TCO2 vs. LONG Chlorophyll vs. Julian Time Chlorophyll vs. LAT Chlorophyll vs. LONG Chlorophyll vs. TCO2 Temperature vs. TCO2 Salinity vs. TCO2 fCO2 (water) vs. TCO2 fCO2 (air) vs. TCO2 Surface Bottle Data: 1. TSG salinity and temperature, LAT, LONG, bottle oxygen, bottle chlorophyll, PO4, SiO3, NO2, and NO3 were merged. 2. The TSG was not stable and therefore no salinity correction was applied 3. HgCl2 volume correction (DIC*1.00037) was applied. 4.
