-- SATL91, Leg 1, Master Database -- This file is a chronology of changes and/additions to the master database for the SATL91 (South Atlantic, 1991) cruise, Leg 1. The data file accompanying this file has the basic structure of SATL91X1.DBF, where the X represents the most recent change in an alphabetical format, and 1 represents Leg 1. If the changes go beyond Z, the next change will be 1. Example: SATL91P1.DBF. This file you are now reading should always accompany the master datafile. Finally, a file with a .CSV file extent may be present which is usually a comma delimited file. The most recent changes are described immediately following this sentence. ========================================================================= March 20, 1996 (B.Huss) Today marks the release of version R of the Leg 1 master database, SATL91R1. See version P for the field structure. March 20, 1996 (B.Huss) Calculated sigmatheta and theta using a slightly different algorithm (SIGMA.FOR) and merged the data into SATL91 database (SATL91R1.DBF). January 11, 1996 (B.Huss) Corrected the sigmatheta values for cast 33 (per Dr. Peng). November 3, 1995 (B.Huss) Corrected the .UNI file (per Dr. Peng). June 23, 1995 (J.Hendee) Today marks the release of version Q of the Leg 1 master database, SATL91Q1. See version P for the field structure. June 23, 1995 (B.Huss) Deleted sample numbers 1402,1404,1406,1408,1410,1412,1414, 1416,1418,1420,1422 and 1424 (all data was missing). Added the ops number and date for samples 3323 and 3324 (they were missing). January 12, 1995 (J.Hendee) Today marks the release of version P of the Leg 1 master database, SATL91P1. The new field structure is listed below. The only change has been the addition of the date field and the Operations Number (OPS_NO) field, which is a concatenation of year (e.g., 91), Julian Day (e.g. 201), and an increasing operations number (e.g., 96). Today's release of SATL91 (version O), probably the last, does not have all the descriptions of changes made on the master since that time. Following is the structure for the master database: Structure for database: satl91o1 Number of data records: 755 Date of last update : 07/20/94 Field Field Name Type Width Dec 1 DEC_LAT Numeric 11 3 2 DEC_LON Numeric 11 3 3 SAMP_NO Numeric 11 4 PRESSURE Numeric 11 5 DEPTH Numeric 11 6 TEMP Numeric 10 3 7 TEMP_QC Numeric 10 8 THETA Numeric 10 3 9 SIGMA_THET Numeric 10 3 10 BOT_SALIN Numeric 10 3 11 QC-BOTTLE_ Numeric 10 12 OXY_WINK Numeric 10 3 13 QC_OXY Numeric 10 14 NO2 Numeric 5 2 15 NO3 Numeric 5 2 16 QC_NO3 Numeric 10 17 SIO4 Numeric 6 2 18 QC_SIO4 Numeric 10 19 TCO2_AOML Numeric 11 1 20 QC_TCO2 Numeric 10 21 FCO2_W20 Numeric 11 1 22 QC_FCO2 Numeric 10 23 TALK Numeric 11 1 24 QCTALK Numeric 10 25 TCO2_FM Numeric 11 1 26 PH Numeric 11 3 27 TALK_CALC Numeric 10 1 28 DOC Numeric 10 1 ** Total ** 277 June 25, 1993 (J.Hendee) Denis Frazel's final nutrient data added to master database. Field type changed from character to numeric for SAMP_NO to help with data merging. This most recent data files is SATL91L.DBF. June 24, 1993 (J.Hendee) Made two separate files, SATL91K.DBF, the mater data file, and S92_ST2.DBF, the station data file. Updated both with Doug Wilson's latest CTD data file (S91CTD.DBF), which I got from Evan Forde. Still need to update with Frazel's nutrient file, NUTS91.DBF. June 7, 1993 (J.Hendee) Replaced two SIO3 values that read -0.40 with -9.99 (NULL). Denis Frazel advised me that we still need bottle mis-trip data before final quality control of nutrient data. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ June 7, 1993 (J.Hendee) Made changes to nutrient parameters, based on message from Denis Frazel: Nutrient Data Update 5/26/93 per Denis Frazel 1. Station 5, Cast 5 values have been replaced with corrected values. 2. Station 6, Cast 6 Two Sample #614's were present. The second sample was deleted. 3. At Station 10, Cast 9 Samples 902,904,906,908,910,912,914,916,918,920,922,924 replaced with -9.99, no samples were taken. 4. At Station 19, Cast 16 Samples 1620-1624 are -9.99, no samples taken. 5. At Station 24, Cast 20 Samples 2002,2004,2006,2008,2010, 2012,2014, etc. are -9.99, no samples taken. 6. At Station 33, Cast 26 Sample 2618 = -9.99, no sample taken. 7. At Station 35, Cast 28 Samples 2801-2807, 2810 replaced with -9.99. Also, silicate values added for Cast 12, bottles 1-21. No silicate samples taken for bottles 22,23 and 24. Phosphate and ammonia fields have been eliminated, since there are no values for these in the entire database. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ May 10, 1993 (J.Hendee) Program run to check for valid ranges. The ranges were chosen in consultation with Rik Wanninkof and Denis Frazel. All NULL values, or values below -3.00 (except latitude/longitude), were replaced with -9.99. Some nutrient values are below 0.0, but they have not yet been replaced with -9.99 until final consultation with Denis Frazel and George Berberian. Value of -3.00 was chosed because of valid temper- ature change, but will probably refine this in next update of RANGES program. Superfluous fields of CTD_KEY, NISKIN_NO, OXY_MVOLT and OXY_TEMP were removed from the master database. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 30, 1993 (B.Huss) The sigmatheta values I generated using Libby Johns program were inaccurate. Given certain program constraints (the variables passed to the subroutines in Libby's program have to be called p,t,s for pressure, temperature and salinity), I regenerated the Master Data File with the correct sigmatheta values. I also changed the size of SIO3 from F5.2 to F6.2 since there were two values from the corrected nutrient values that exceeded the F5.2 format. Recreated the data base and named the .DBF file SATL91E.DBF. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 28, 1993 (B.Huss) Merged the nutrient data from Dennis Frazel into the Master Data file. Renamed the .DBF file SATL91D.DBF. The productivity data seems to have inaccurate lats and longs given the cast; Jim is checking into this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 20, 1993 (J.Hendee) Received correct course to go from Gary Hitchcock. Am giving Betty Huss Gary's nutrient data. Gary will supply formula for integration of productivity data, if required. Fields in productivity database that Betty will merge on are probably CTD_CAST, DEPTH, DEC_LAT and/or DEC_LONG. Fields from Gary's data to be included in the master database are only PROD_RATE (productivity rate, or mg carbon per cubic meter per hour: mg C/m^3), CARB_DAY (mg carbon per cubic meter per day: mg C/m^3/day), CHLORO_A (mg chlorophyll per cubic meter per hour: mg Chl a), CHLORO_DAY (mg C/Chl a/day) and TOT_PIGS (total pigments per cubic meter per hour). ~~~~~~~~~~~~ April 20, 1993 (J.Hendee) Transferred SATL91C.DBF (most recent update of file) to Betty Huss so she could add nutrient data received from Denis Frazel to the master data file (SATL91C.DBF). She will rename file to SATL91D.DBF when she is finished. Productivity data from Gary Hitchcock is all we need (I think) to finish up Master Data File. Gary has preliminary stuff from me, but he has to show me some calculations. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ March 25, 1993 (J.Hendee) Transferred corrected data file from Macintosh Excel file to PC, and reviewed fields to see if there were any -10s instead of -9.99s in fields having NULL data. This version now has casts 32 and 33 CTD data. Also, sigma theta for cast 33 bottles 23 and 24. =========================================================================== Fields in Database as of 4/20/93: Structure for database: satl91c.dbf Number of data records: 757 Date of last update : 03/25/93 Field Field Name Type Width Dec 1 STATION Character 6 2 CAST Character 4 3 NISKIN_NO Character 8 4 CTD_KEY Character 7 5 SAMP_NO Character 7 6 OPS_NO Character 14 7 LAT_DEG Numeric 7 8 LAT_MIN Numeric 7 2 9 LAT_HEM Character 7 10 DEC_LAT Numeric 7 3 11 LONG_DEG Numeric 8 12 LONG_MIN Numeric 8 2 13 LONG_HEM Character 8 14 DEC_LONG Numeric 8 3 15 PRESSURE Numeric 8 16 DEPTH Numeric 5 17 TEMP Numeric 6 3 18 THETA Numeric 7 3 19 SIGMA_THET Numeric 9 3 20 CONDUCTIV Numeric 8 3 21 NB_SALIN Numeric 7 3 22 BOT_SALIN Numeric 8 3 23 OXY_MVOLT Numeric 9 2 24 OXY_TEMP Numeric 8 2 25 OXY_SENSOR Numeric 9 2 26 OXY_WINK Numeric 8 2 27 NO3 Numeric 5 2 28 NO2 Numeric 5 2 29 NO3LESNO2 Numeric 9 2 30 SI03 Numeric 6 2 31 PO4 Numeric 5 2 32 NH4 Numeric 5 2 33 PH Numeric 6 3 34 TCO2_AOML Numeric 9 2 35 CO2_FM Numeric 7 2 36 ALKALINITY Numeric 9 2 37 TOC Numeric 6 2 38 PCO2_W20 Numeric 8 2 39 PCO2_INSIT Numeric 9 4 40 TALK_CALC Numeric 8 2 41 COLUMETER Character 9 ** Total ** 304
