R-P sections showing the changes (m/s) in U (top) and V (bottom) flow in Hurricane Emily for the 24 h period ending at 0000 UTC 25 September. These difference fields were obtained using data collected during NOAA P-3 research flights conducted at ~0000 UTC on 24 and 25 September. The figure shows increased radial inflow (U<0) below ~600 mb and in increase in outflow above this level. An increase in the tangential flow (V>0) is also observed above ~600 mb near the storm center. These changes in the wind fields are consistent with an intensifying storm and are qualitatively consistent with the changes expected by balanced vortex theory.
