Mission Plan :

The G-IV jet, with scientific crew of Chris Landsea and Rob Rogers, conducted an NHC-tasked synoptic surveillance mission around Hurricane Lili at the nominal time of 00 UTC/October 3. Take-off time was at 1:30 PM EDT from MacDill AFB and landed at 9:30 PM EDT in MacDill AFB, FL.

Mission Summary :

A phone call was made to the Hurricane Specialist on Duty, Stacey Stewart. The following important information was relayed :

  1. There is no sign of the subtropical ridge in the deep-layer mean.
  2. The 200 mb trough is to the west, with outflow in other directions.
  3. The circulation is up to 400 mb.
  4. There is very dry air at 500 mb to the west of the storm.
  5. There is dry air to the southeast of the storm near the Yucatan, and in the western Gulf of Mexico at 700 mb. The air at 850 mb is moist.
  6. There are 40 kt surface winds to the northwest, and two 30 kt surface winds to the northeast.
