Mission Plan :

The G-IV jet, with scientific crew of Sean White, Stan Goldenberg, and a guest scientist,conducted an NHC-tasked synoptic surveillance mission around Hurricane Isidore at the nominal time of 12 UTC/September 21. Take-off time was at 1:30 AM EDT from MacDill AFB and landed at 10:00 AM EDT at MacDill AFB, FL.

Mission Summary :

A phone call was made to the Hurricane Specialist on Duty, Lixion Avila. The following important information was relayed :

  1. The circulation was clearly seen in the deep-layer mean. The deep-layer cyclonic circulation was northwest of Yucatan. There was no sign of a deep-layer ridge axis.
  2. There was nice outflow at 200 mb. There were two anticyclonic circulations displace from the center, one 500 km northwest, the other 500 km southeast.
  3. There was a strong cyclonic circulation at 200 mb northwest of the Yucatan extending to 500 mb.
  4. The 200 mb trough extends northeastward from the storm.
  5. The outflow channel north of Cuba was at 200 to 250 mb.
  6. A weak cyclonic circulation from 200 to 250 mb was 250 km south of the storm.
  7. A 250 mb anticyclonic circulation was in the central Gulf of Mexico.
  8. The circulation extended up to 300 mb.
  9. A 300 to 400 mb trough extends southeast of the storm.
  10. Dry air at 700 mb was over eastern Cuba, near the storm to southwest of the Cayman Islands, and in the western Gulf of Mexico. Not much dry air at 850 mb.
  11. There was a strong low-level inflow in the western Caribbean Sea.
