Mission Plan :

NOAA 43RF will conduct an NHC-tasked reconnaissance mission into TD09 in the Gulf of Mexico for a 1730 and 2330Z center fix at 2500 ft. If time allows after the 1730Z fix, N43 will climb to 5000 ft for a rotated Fig. 4, with S to N and W to E legs. We would then need to be lower for the 2330Z fix.

Mission Summary :

Take off Landing
MacDill AFB, FL 15:51 UTC MacDill AFB, FL 00:52 UTC

NOAA 43RF conducted an NHC-tasked reconnaissance mission into TD09 in the Gulf of Mexico, initially at 2500 ft for the 1730Z fix. Once released from NHC-tasking, after executing NW-SE and NE-SW legs, N43 climbed to 5000 ft and flew the S to N portion of the rotated Fig. 4 and dropped 4 sondes at the turns and midpoints. We were then asked by CARCAH to return to 2500 ft for our W to E pass, as well as the SE to NW pass that followed for the 2330Z fix. Precipitation was predominantly downshear and at a minimum during the early portion of the flight, but new convection formed not only downshear, but also in the W and SW (upshear) quadrants of the TD in the latter half of the flight. This was a distinct change from the previous days, when clouds and precipitation were noticeably absent from the W and SW sides. A large vertical misalignment of the low and midlevel centers (to the SE) remained.
