The G-IV jet, with scientific crew of Sim Aberson and Taiwanese scientists Ching-Hwang Liu and Pay-Liam Lin, conducted an NHC-tasked synoptic surveillance mission around STS Gustav at the nominal time of 00 UTC/September 10. Take-off time was at 1:30 PM EDT from MacDill AFB and landing at 10:00 PM EDT at MacDill AFB, FL.
Summary :
A phone call was made to NHC Specialist on duty, Miles Lawrence at 7:45pm EDT Sept. 9, 2002. Important information relayed to specialist :
1. Large circulation from the surface to 200 mb. The circulation center is displaced slightly eastward (100 km) at 250 and 200 mb.
2. Midlevel low near Bermuda.
3. Anticyclone at 250 and 200 mb about 750 km northeast of the storm.
4. Moisture in all quadrants to near flight level.
Problems encountered during flight :
1. SATCOM complete failure. Sent all data via Iridium.
