Committee Meetings
The committee met at the 23rd AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical
Meteorology. Committee business was also accomplished through email
and telephone conferencing.

AMS Scientific/Technical Meetings arranged or sponsored
The 23rd AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology
took place at the 79th AMS annual meeting, 11-15 January 1999 in
Dallas, TX. A celebration of the 25th Anniversary of GATE included
a panel discussion and reflections from many of the scientists integral
to the success of GATE. This conference included symposia:

"Reflections on GATE" (Joint with the 13th Conference on Boundary
Layers and Turbulence)

"Trials and Tribulations of Meteorological Website Mania"
Joint sessions included

Adaptive observing strategies (with the symposium on Integrated Observing
Systems)

Tropical atmosphere and ocean boundary layers (with the 13th Conference
on Boundary Layers and Turbulence)

Effects of the tropics on global hydrology (joint with hydrology)

Multidecadal and millenial scale tropical cyclone variability (with 10th
Global Change Symposium)

Climatic change and tropical cyclones (with 10th Global Change Symposium)

Awards given this year

Max Eaton award:
-
Prof. John E. Molinari (SUNY Albany) received the Banner L. Miller award
for or his lead authorship of two outstanding contributions to our understanding
of tropical cyclogenesis and hurricane intensity published during the years
1995-97.

Dr Robert Burpee received the Charles L. Mitchell Award (administered by
the Weather and Forecasting Committee) for the advancement of hurricane
track forecasting through both research and administrative leadership.

Proposed Future AMS Scientific/Technical Meetings
The 24th AMS Conference on Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology
will be held in conjunction with the in
Fort Lauderdale, FL, from 29 May - 2 June 2000. The dealine for submission
of abstracts has passed (1 November 1999).

Notes on other committee activities
The committee is nearing compleetion of a review of the AMS Statement
on Hurricane Detection, Tracking, and Forecasting. Dr Christopher Landsea
was the committee liaison.

Changes in committee membership
Dr Jenni Evans (PSU) completes her term as chair of this committee
on 30 January 2000. The new committee chair will be Dr Chris Landsea of
HRD. Other committee members completing their terms are Drs Richard Pasch
(NHC), Thomas Keenan (BMRC) and Morris Bender (GFDL). Thanks to all of
these for their service. Incoming committee members are Drs Noel Davidson
(BMRC), Elizabeth Ritchie (NPS) and Lixion Avila (NHC). Click here for

Recommendations/problems/issues
A number of issues relating predominantly to organization and implementation
of large meetings arose in response to difficulties experienced by attendees
at the 23rd Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference. These were
summarised and shared with the AMS staff (copies of this memo are available).
This report covers the period 1 January through 31 December 1999.
