Accomplishments 2004-2005 mid term review, Mayra Pazos, 3-24, 2005 Oct 2004 Received data from Dennis Orachesqui, (Environment Canada) exp 323 buoys, from 2001, data from e-mails stored in: /phodnet/share/pazos/323canada/ files are edited and ready to process once a program is in place, metadata received. Dec 2004 Made all b-files for Canadian drifters received data by e-mail. f2:[pazos.tape.323canada] idlist.txt (and idlist.lis) all data, programs and runstreams files are here as well. produced figures and reviewed for co-authoring a chapter with Rick Lumpkin in a book published by Arthur Mariano (RSMAS-Um) Continue to communicate with other PIs and buoy operators from different institutions, and/or assist and provide in technical or any other related issues regarding drifter data acquisition processing and interpretation Jan 2005 program readlogall.for was corrected, found bug when going from days 36x to jan days (ex; dec 27 to jan 3: 361 3) when computing the difference between the 2 days (3-361= -358) it would pass the 10 day check because -358 is not greater than 10, and many buoys that quit reporting in Jan were being counted as alive on the egg maps, therefore, a higher number of buoys reporting. Also I added code to ignore buoys that are non-svp or are fixed stations (buoys in file: deep_drogue.dat) find_in_egg.m Matlab program to read file from program readlogall (from Monday Jobs) and plot a map with all buoys transmitting, and be able to click on a map to identify 2 buoys calls function: getdriftpos.m Adapted Rick's original function: getdrift.m to display lat, lon, and exp#. (One of several programs written to be shared with Craig and Jessica) Feb 2005 program main_dailyposplt.m and function map_ltln_date.m to plot 10 day daily tracks with st and et. Written for Jessica and Craig to use as tools. infile: output from running fortran program:get_daily_pos.for which uses a daily file, and makes a file with all ids, lat, lon,yr,mm,day, exp# of all buoys in daily file, to be input to main_dailyposplt.m matlab program Feb 2005 co-author a paper with Rick accepted in Feb 2005,published in a book that Arthur Mariano wrote. " Measuring surface currents with SVP drifters: the instrument, its data and some recent results" Rewrote with Rick, egg plot using matlab and using the new format suggested by Mike Johnson. This program creates a jpeg file, converts it to gif, rotates it, scales it and ftp the .gif and .ps files to the web, all inside the matlab program. PROGRAM: /d2/prg/matlab/programs/neweggplot.m Mar 2005 Invited as a speaker to the Argos Users Regional Conference, in Annapolis, MD, April 5-7 Prepared a presentation to be given at the Argos Users Regional Conference in Annapolis, Maryland, April 5-7:, "Objectives and Activities of the Drifter Data Aseembly Center of NOAA/AOML". Took the lead in distributing, organizing and compiling the write ups for the new GOOS web page. Worked with Rick in looking at the drogue by manufacturer, and put together a message with examples to each of the different manufacturers, to try to show them the problems we were having with the different cases of drogue off. Followed up with them to have the answers ASAP. (very tedious, and time consuming exercise, that took lots of time from Rick and myself, but needed to be able to assess and understand the scope of the drogue problems Working on a poster to be presented at the OGP review, April 2005 by Rick, Silvia, etc Tracked problem identified by Jessica about progrm 9600 Navy program dissappearing from daily files. Argos reported that NAVY had transfered all buoys out of their program, the only one we have access to. I tried contacting Beth Horton's office and found out she was in Brest, same meeting Cook was, I contacted Cook for him to talk to Beth and found out what was the problem. Followed up on the problem, taken to Molinari as well April 2005 Started contacting different pis to gain access to promised data (south Carolina Josh), contacted Oracheski to receive GTS file once a week from his buoys (+6) to include in weekly status map) Added code to readlogall.for program to add Oracheski GTS data. and to read a file: ans:readlogall_gr.dat that contains the grounded buoys Jessica has found so they don't show on the status map, and not put them on inactive status as of yet. Added program 1266 to daily files to add 3 more buoys to status array. Writing code to decode GTS files received daily from NOS to pull NAVY data on GTS , which we used to receive under program 9600 Met in Miami with manufacturer Jeff Wingenroth and Greg Maki, to resolve problem with Technocean drogue behavior, on April 22, 2005 May 2005 Added prgoram 0046 (Dpn Murphy- IIP) to daily files,to add 3 SVP-15 deployed on April 15, 2005, adding more buoys to the 1250 array. (+3) Contacted Josh from South Carolina, to realease once a week position from his buoys just deployed but still in exclusive use mode in his program, to be able to show them in status array, until we get them into our program. Ammended readlogall program to read this file and add to input file to neweggplot.m program (+9) Contacted Dennis Oracheski from Canada to provide us with GTS real time data from his buoys on Mondays, to add to status array map (+6) our program. Ammended readlogall program to read this file and add to input file to neweggplot.m program (+9) Added necessary code to Rick's program: predict_array.m and Jessica's program:array_droguestatus.m to create file names and run script to move to the web. Added bottons on the Web page to access both: mmmyy_forecast90d.gif and mmmyy_droguestatus.gif e-mail sent to M.Johnson letting him know where to access maps. Added options to comprocmenu to: 1: Given a list of ids, it creates list files separated by manufacturer (Jessica will need it to make drogue plots) 2: Be able to create a list file with alive ids, separated by manufacturer 3: Added to drogue plots, ending time, d. off date and death code to make it easier in the process of reprocessing drogue plots. New program: main_get_navy_monday_gts.for and subroutine get_navy_monday_gts.for to read a daily gts file and extract navy buoys that were un progrm 9600 and were transfered out. Modified program: readlogall, to call routine get_navy_monday_gts, to get navy drifters from GTS and added to readlogall file to show on egg plot. Modified subroutine to return buoy codes from tpb_ab_coef file get_i_code.for June 2005 Wrote a program: RETURN_IDS_TO_ARGOS.for, to improve the way we were returning ids to Argos, and so minimize the unused ids charges every month. infile: is the list of ids received from Argos outfile: return.dat (for ids to be returned) and examine.dat ids that need further examination before returning. it automatically sends return.dat file to Argos, and examine.dat to Craig for further examination July 2005 Started working with Rick to prepare a presentation for the DBCP to be presented by Rick on how to predict and maintain the 1250 array. The work was about 3/4 completed then had to be stopped, due to Rick not going to DBCP, and Mayra had to get heavily involved in another presentation with Craig for the ADB study All matlab programs written by Mayra with discussions of ideas and mathematical methods with Rick. August 2005 Writing programs (in the VAX and in Unix, using Matlab) to decode, process and analize daily data from the ADB buoys to present at the DBCP meeting in Argentina September 2005 Preparing presentation for DBCP of the ADB (Atlantic Demostration Project) to be presented with Craig, which will take the lead in the logistics, deployments and packaging issues. Continue to return IDS to Argos to lower (get it down to 0) the amount of money charged by Unused IDS.) Accomplishments 2005 In 2005, began to write general matlab programs for Jessica and Craig to use as tools.
