ReadDIC.txt Readme file for UW DIC-96 The UW DIC-96 file contains surface water data of total dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from the Malcolm Baldrige around the world cruise (also referred to as the Indian ocean cruise) 1995. Most of the data was taken from the underway sampling line that supplies water to the underway pCO2 system while some of the spatial gaps were filled with values from the surface Niskin from the CTD. In general the data quality was not as good as dedicated cruises. On some legs the samples were stored for several months before analyses while on other legs samples were run by survey technicians not fully familiar with instrumentation. As general guide: Samples from- MB-01 MB-04 MB-07 were analyzed soon after sampling by qualified analysts. The other samples were stored for more than a month and/or analyzed by novices. Sample sheet annotation was sometimes insufficient and mislabeling appears to have occurred. Although every attempt was made to quality control the data some errors might have slipped through the cracks. This is particularly the case for MB-08. One diagnostic for possible analysis problems or mislabeling is the difference between the salinity measured on the SOMMA and the salinity measured by the TSG. Column headers: Cruise: name of cruise JD (dec): decimal Julian day Lat: decimal latitude. This was obtained from the UWpCO2 system and cross-checked with the sampling log. Long: decimal longitude. This was obtained from the UWpCO2 system and cross-checked with the sampling log. SommaSal: salinity obtained from the sensor on the SOMMA (offset applied, see below) Type: UW= from underway sampling line; CTD=from the top Niskin bottle on the CTD QC: quality control flag- 2=good; 3=questionable; 6=duplicate; 0=insufficient support data to perform quality control DIC [ mol/kg]: DIC concentration (offset applied , see below) RM correct: magnitude of correction to DIC based on CRM data SST(TSG): sea surface temperature obtained from thermosalinograph at intake (merged from UWpCO2 file) Sal (TSG): sea surface salinity obtained from thermosalinograph at intake (merged from UWpCO2 file) fCO2w: underway fCO2w value (merged from UWpCO2 file) deltafCO2: water -air fCO2 (merged from UWpCO2 file) Salinity and DIC offsets applied to DIC data Offset Cruise Date Port of Call SOMMA* DIC Sal.
