John Cortinas Elected AMS Fellow, and AOML and CIMAS Hurricane Researchers Win the Banner I. Miller Award
AOML Director Dr. John Cortinas has been elected to become a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society. Fellows are elected for their “outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.” John has been member of the American Meteorological Society since 1983, supporting the organization as an associate editor for the journals Weather and Forecasting and Monthly Weather Review. Additionally, John has served as the AMS Chairperson of the Minority Scholarship Committee, a member of the Board on Women and Minorities, and as a member of the Weather Analysis and Forecasting Committee.
Jun Zhang (CIMAS), David S. Nolan, Robert F. Rogers (AOML), and Vijay S. Tallapragada (NCEP) have been awarded the Banner I. Miller Award for their paper, “Evaluating the impact of improvements in the boundary layer parameterization on hurricane intensity and structure forecasts in HWRF,” which significantly advanced the prediction of hurricanes in an operational numerical weather prediction model. The Banner I. Miller Award is given for an outstanding contribution to the science of hurricane and tropical weather forecasting published in a journal with international circulation during the 48 months prior to the deadline for nominations.
In January 2020, the recipients will receive their awards and recognition at the 100th Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.
