No hurricane response drifters were deployed during the 2006 hurricane season. This was due to the generally mild nature of
the 2006 season and the lack of tropical storm activity in the Gulf of Mexico.
When the
2008 hurricane season begins, NOAA's
Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological
Laboratory (AOML) will be standing by, ready to deploy Lagrangian surface drifters in targeted
nearshore (shallow-water) regions of the Gulf of Mexico should major tropical systems
affect the region.
