QUARTERLY LAGRANGIAN
DRIFTER DEPLOYMENTS

As part of NOAA's South Florida Program, the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) and the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) deploy Lagrangian surface drifters in south Florida coastal waters on a quarterly basis. These satellite-tracked drifters enable scientists to monitor regional flow patterns of the coastal ocean in real-time.

These data along with ship track data and mooring data contribute to the South Florida Regional Observing System (SF-ROS) being implemented by NOAA/AOML in support of South Florida Everglades Restoration and NOAA legislative regional mandates with regard to living marine resource protection and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. The integrated SF-ROS system consists of these observations and a regional hydrodynamic model (SoFla HYCOM) which will assimilate these data.

Drifter deployments are regularly made at the mouth of the Shark River north of Cape Sable, at Riley's Hump in the Dry Tortugas, and in the Caloosahatchie River discharge near Charlotte Harbor, Florida. Drifter trajectory plots and ascii data sets for drifters deployed at these locations are available on this page. Regional surface velocity data have been collected since the mid 1990's. Beginning with the 2005 hurricane season, drifter deployments were also conducted to track suspected downstream pollutant contaminant pathways in the Gulf of Mexico.
