Research» Real-Time, Near Real-Time and Archived Data Near Real-Time and Archived Data Hydrographic Surveys of South Florida Surveys are conducted to study the hydrography and water quality of South Florida. These surveys are conducted aboard the R/V Virginia K and the R/V Walton Smith, and utilize an underway flow-through system equipped with a Seabird model 21 thermosalinograph, a Seapoint chlorophyll fluorometer, a Seapoint ultraviolet fluorometer, and a Wetlabs transmissometer to collect data while the ship is underway. The underway measurements include temperature, salinity, percent light transmission at l=660nm, chlorophyll a fluorescence, and CDOM fluorescence. This data is collected at seven-second intervals and is stamped with the time and GPS position of the measurement. In addition to the underway measurements, there are discrete sampling stations to calibrate the underway instrumentation and calibrate supplementary data. This enables the underway recordings to be converted to concentration values. The result is a quickly produced, high spatial resolution “snapshot” of the temperature, salinity, and water quality parameters for South Florida's ecosystem.
