Global Drifter Program Objectives
- Describe mixed-layer velocity on a global basis (5 deg. lat X 5 deg. lon resolution). Produce new charts of seasonal surface circulation of the world ocean.
- Provide operational data stream
- SST
- sea level pressure
- surface velocity
- Verify global climate models
- surface velocity; SST advection
- turbulent momentum convergence at 15m
- Compute single particle diffusivities, eddy statistics and interannual to annual variability
- Construct models of wind driven currents
- Obtain high resolution coverage in special regions for process studies, e.g.,
- California current
- Kuroshio
- Brazil current
- North Atlantic subduction zone
- TOGA/COARE; TOGA/TIWE
