Global Drifter Program Objectives

1. Describe mixed-layer velocity on a global basis (5 deg. lat X 5 deg. lon resolution). Produce new charts of seasonal surface circulation of the world ocean.

2. Provide operational data stream
   • SST
   • sea level pressure
   • surface velocity
3. Verify global climate models
   • surface velocity; SST advection
   • turbulent momentum convergence at 15m
4. Compute single particle diffusivities, eddy statistics and interannual to annual variability

5. Construct models of wind driven currents

6. Obtain high resolution coverage in special regions for process studies, e.g.,
   • California current
   • Kuroshio
   • Brazil current
   • North Atlantic subduction zone
   • TOGA/COARE; TOGA/TIWE
