SAMOC Data

Data are made available here from selected SAMOC data sets, with links provided to additional SAMOC-related data sets.

Most recent MOC results and data sets

Kersale et al. (2020) horizontally and vertically extends the earlier analysis of Meinen et al. (2018) to resolve the daily transports of both the upper and abyssal overturning cells. This study developed flow estimates from the surface down to approximately 4700 dbar during a roughly 4-year period (September 2013 to July 2017). In this study, nine pressure-equipped inverted echo sounder (PIES)/current-and-pressure-equipped inverted echo sounder (CPIES) moorings in the South Atlantic MOC Basin-wide Array (SAMBA) at 34.5°S are used, and these data are provided here.

The details of the overturning calculations can be found in the linked paper. Here the acoustic travel time and bottom pressure time series are provided, as well as the daily calculated overturning estimates. Data are made available in plain ASCII formatted files.

  • Daily travel time values, calibrated to a nominal pressure of 1000 dbar, and bottom pressures from the nine PIES/CPIES moorings are available here.
  • Upper_Abyssal_Transport_Anomalies.txt: Daily volume transport anomaly estimates for the upper and abyssal cells of the MOC.

If you use these data sets, please make sure to cite the Kersale et al. (2020) publication as it contains the appropriate credit for the data producers in the Acknowledgements.

Earlier MOC results using PIES/CPIES mooring pair and data sets

Meinen et al. (2018) estimated the daily MOC upper limb transport using as the primary data sets the round-trip acoustic travel time and bottom pressure measurements of a pair of PIES/CPIES moorings near the 1300 dbar isobath on either flank of the South Atlantic at 34.5°S.

The details of the calculations can be found in the linked paper. Here the acoustic travel time and bottom pressure time series are provided, as well as the daily MOC measurements and the seasonal cycles/climatologies. Data are made available in plain ASCII formatted files.

If you use these data sets, please make sure to cite the Meinen et al. (2018) publication as it contains the appropriate credit for the data producers in the Acknowledgements.

Meinen et al. (2013) published an earlier version of the MOC estimates using data from 2009-2010. Those MOC estimates can be downloaded here.
