This page may need to be split out into several. Products is a misleading word andshould probably be introduced in a specific context. Nevertheless, here is a minimal list of what should be included. As of a the most recent revision These elements are not even products.

XBT (Expendable Bathythermograph)

NOAA manages a fleet of Voluntary Observing Ships (VOS) that collect upper ocean temperature using an Expendable Bathythermograph (XBT). The NOAA fleet is one component of an international VOS effort. The xbt data displayed when clicking on the XBT link below show positions of weekly XBT launches from the NOAA VOS effort. The XBT positions are superimposed on a monthly climatology of temperature distributions at select depths (Levitus, 1994). Anomalous temperature conditions are noted by the color of the position locater.

Objective:

To measure the upper ocean thermal structure in the center of the subtropical gyre in the NorthAtlantic (AX7) and South Atlantic (AX18), to investigate the regions of the ocean where temperature anomalies have the greatest interaction with the atmosphere (AX10), and to characterize both the mean and thetime-dependent upper ocean properties of the tropical portion of the Meridional Overturning Circulation and of the shallow Subtropical Cell in the Tropical Atlantic ( AX8 ).
