SFERPM Plankton Ecology Goal

Florida Bay is a nursery ground for numerous commercial and recreational significant fisheries species. The principal food of these species is zooplankton that, in turn, consume planktonic algae. Moreover, many fisheries species have minute early stages living in the plankton (so-called icthyoplankton). Planktonic animals are notoriously sensitive to changes in water quality. Predicting the consequences of Restoration upon algal bloom fate and fisheries production is the goal of the SFERPM Plankton Ecology projects.
