The growth of both seagrasses and planktonic algae blooms depends upon the supply of plant nutrients. In Florida Bay these are introduced by freshwater runoff, groundwater seepage, atmospheric deposition, resuspension of bottom sediments and exchange with the Southwest Florida shelf. A quantitative understanding of the relative importance of these various processes and how they effect algal blooms is the goal of the SFERPM Nutrient Chemistry projects.
