Choosing lead for developing common routine/macro for group
Background:
Time and location:
AOML, Miami October 5 and 6, 2005
Coordinators:
Heike Lueger (scientific) heike.lueger@noaa.gov
Betty Huss ( logistics) betty.huss@noaa.gov
Objective:
In order to facilitate ease and uniformity in data reduction procedures of underway pCO2 data a small meeting will be held to agree on data reduction procedures and to start on [semi] automated data reduction and quality control programs to produce the final pCO2 data.
This exercise will focus on exclusively data reduction routines for the Neill system and will be for a select group of members of the Carbo-Oceans and NOAA-VOS_pCO2 efforts. The limited scope of objectives and small size will facilitate reaching consensus on procedures. It is anticipated that a more inclusive meeting will be held on the subject in the near future [organized by IOCCP?].
The need:
In order to avoid biases in global surface water pCO2 observations, there is a need to reach a consensus on data reduction and quality control procedures.
The primary issues are:
Analytical
- Sequence of samples and standards
- How to treat the standards (fits, interpolations)?
- Correction from CO2 content in headspace to SST and ambient pressure
- Data quality flagging, what criteria should be used?
- How to deal with air values (ship contamination, terrestrial influences)?
- How to report the ?pCO2?
- pCO2 vs. fCO2.
Data reduction routines
- What software should we use?
- How automated should data reduction be?
- What limits can we introduce for automated data quality flagging?
- Who will leads the writing and documentation of the routines?
Approach:
The exercise will have two components. First, three datasets obtained from the Neill systems set up on the Columbus Waikato (PMEL), Skogafoss (AOML), and Nuku Artica (Bergen) will be sent to interested parties for reduction according to their current procedures. The raw data can be found at the anonymous FTP site:
ftp://ftp.aoml.noaa.gov/ocd/pub/luger/DATA_RED_WORKSHOP
Each participating group is expected to reduce all three datasets and provide the reduced data along with a readme file outlining procedures and particular issues with the raw datasets. The reduced files and documentation should be sent to Heike Lueger (heike.lueger@noaa.gov) by September 7, 2005
This data reduction exercise will form the basis to determine differences in reduction efforts and to create an uniform data reduction procedure incorporating assessments of the issues listed above.
Product:
At the meeting arrangement will be made to write a documented data reduction program for the Neill system. A lead group will be selected for this task and all participants are expected to contribute to this effort in a meaningful fashion after the meeting.
Meeting venue and invitees:
The meeting will be held at AOML. Participants in the NOAA VOS program will be invited along with other selected [Carbo_Oceans] users of the Neill systems.
Anticipated participants representing the AOML, PMEL, U. Bergen and Kiel pCO2 groups (as of 7/7/05):
