sobre distintos estados, de los EE.UU. se basa en la escala Saffir-Simpson
(TX S-Texas Sur, TX C-Texas Central, TX N-Texas Norte, LA-Luisiana,
MS-Misisipi, AL-Alabama, FL NO-Noroeste Florida SO-Suroeste, FL
SE-Sureste Florida, FL NE- Noreste Florida, GA-Georgia, CS-Carolina del Sur,
CN-Carolina del Norte VA- Virginia, MD-Maryland, DE-Delaware, NJ-Nueva Jersey,
NY-Nueva York, PA-Pensilvania, CT-Connecticut, RI-Rhode Island,
MA-Massachusetts, NH-Nuevo Hampshire, ME-Maine. En Texas, el sur se refiere al
área de la frontera mexicana a Corpus Christi; El centro abarca desde el norte
de Corpus Christi hasta la Bahía Matagorda y el norte se refiere a la región de
la Bahía Matagorda hasta la frontera de Luisiana. En Florida, la línea divisora
del norte-sur es desde Cabo Cañaveral [28.45°N] hasta Tarpon Springs [28.17°N].
La línea divisora entre oeste-este de la Florida abarca desde 82.69°O. al norte
de la frontera de la Florida con Georgia, hasta el Lago Okeechobee y rumbo sur
a lo largo de la longitud 80.85°O.).
Máxima categoría en la Escala de Vientos de Saffir-Simpson en EE.UU.:
Impacto de huracán con la mayor categoría en la Escala de Vientos de
Saffir-Simpson, en los Estados Unidos, basado en la velocidad de los
vientos sostenidos máximos, producidos en la costa.
Presión central: la presión central observada (o analizada teniendo en
cuenta presiones periféricas) del huracán al tocar tierra.
Vientos máximos: Vientos máximos sostenidos (1-min)
en la superficie (10 m) a lo largo de la costa de los EE.UU. Vientos estimados
con aproximación a 10 nudos para el periodo de 1851 a 1885 y de casi 5 nudos
para el periodo de 1886 a la fecha. (1 nudo = 1.15 mph).
*-Indica que el centro del huracán no tocó tierra en los EE.UU. (o se
debilitó sustancialmente antes de tocar tierra), pero produjo vientos
huracanados a su paso. En tal caso la presión central del huracán se le da al
punto de mayor cercanía.
&-Indica que el centro del huracán tocó tierra directamente, pero los
vientos más fuertes probablemente permanecieron fuera de la costa. De este
modo los vientos indicados aquí son más bajos que en la base de datos de
huracanes (HURDAT por sus siglas en inglés)
#-Indica que el huracán tocó tierra sobre México y también causó vientos
sostenidos con fuerza de huracán en Texas. Los vientos más fuertes al tocar
tierra impactaron a México, mientras que la debilidad de los vientos sostenidos
indicados aquí fueron condiciones estimadas que ocurrieran en Texas. La
presión central indicada es dada al tocar tierra en México.
Nota adicional:
Debido al esparcimiento de pueblos y ciudades antes de 1900 en algunas
localidades costeras a lo largo de Estados Unidos, la lista anterior no es
completa par todos los estados. Antes de que la costas del Golfo de México y
del Atlántico fueran pobladas, la intensidad de los huracanes pudo haber sido
desestimada o erróneamente confundida por sistemas tropicales de pequeño tamaño
(como el Huracán Charley en el 2004). La lista que figura a continuación
proporciona las fechas aproximadas del comienzo de los registros de ciclones
tropicales, en regiones específicas de los Estados Unidos, basada en el reporte
del Censo de EE.UU. y otros análisis históricos. Los años en paréntesis indican
las posibles fechas de inicio de registros fiables antes del año de 1850, que
quizás pudieran estar disponibles con investigación adicional.
