Ground-based Velocity Track Display (GBVTD)

Principal Investigator: Shirley Murillo (HRD)

Team Members:

Peter Dodge (HRD)
Frank Marks (HRD)
Nick Carrasco (UM-CIMAS/HRD)
Rob Rogers (UM-CIMAS/HRD)
Paul Leighton (HRD)

Outside Team members:

Wen-Chau Lee (NCAR/ATD)
Colin McAdie (TPC/NHC)
Objectives of group:
The Ground-Based Velocity Track Display (GBVTD) is a wind retrieval algorithm that deduces a tropical cyclone's primary circulation using single-Doppler velocity radar data. This group intends to examine landfalling tropical cyclone's structure via the GBVTD technique.

Methods:
Currently group members are working on manuscripts using Hurricane Danny (1997) radar data. As part of HRD's Hurricane Field Program, we'll continue to collect ground-based radar data in the vicinity of landfalling tropical cyclones.

Proposed Milestones:
Finished manuscripts (listed below)

  • Murillo et al. (H. Danny) paper [in progress]
  • Harasti et al. (Suite of algorithms including GBVTD) [in internal review]
  • Lee and Bell (New and improved way to calculate centers using Danny data) [in progress]
  • Pitter et al. (H. Bret) paper [possible rewrite up for publication]

Other GBVTD group interests:

  • 2003 AMS Radar Conference 6-12 August, Seattle, WA.
  • Possible HRD Post-doc Olivier Nuissier who worked with Frank Roux. He may have interests in our group.
  • Potential visit from Jin-Luen Lee (FSL) who is working on an initialization scheme using GBVTD data to ingest into the MM5 model.
