Hurricane Research Division's
Objectives

The Hurricane Research Division (HRD) is a part of the Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States Department of Commerce. HRD is NOAA's primary focus for studies of tropical cyclones and convective systems, with a mission to:

Improve forecasting through physical understanding of the structure and dynamics of tropical cyclones.
Conduct annual Hurricane Field Program using the two NOAA AOC WP-3D research aircraft and the new Gulfstream IV-SP operational aircraft.
Interact with the OAR (NHC), the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP), and the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL) in research of numerical modeling of tropical cyclones.
Participate in international tropical meteorological field programs and National research programs.
