Mission Plan :

The G-IV jet, with scientific crew of Sean White and Shirley Murillo, conducted an NHC-tasked synoptic surveillance mission around Hurricane Lili at the nominal time of 12 UTC/October 2. Take-off time was at 1:30 AM EDT from MacDill AFB and landed at 10 AM EDT in MacDill AFB, FL.

Mission Summary :

A phone call was made to the Hurricane Specialist on Duty. The following important information was relayed :

  1. The storm is visible in the deep-layer mean. There is no sign of a subtropical ridge axis.
  2. There is southerly flow over the storm at 200 mb. The upper level low over south Texas is tilted southward and extends to the western Gulf of Mexico at 400 mb.
  3. The storm circulation only extends up to 400 mb.
  4. At 700 mb there is a pocket of dry air over the western Gulf of Mexico. The air at 850 mb is moist.
  5. There is a 30 kt surface wind well to the north and southeast of the storm center.
