Mission Plan:

N42RF will fly another NESDIS Ocean Winds experiment and AXBT deployment mission with the same crew over the Gulf region surveyed and sampled yesterday. Takeoff time will be at noon EDT, and recovery will be back at MacDill around 9 p.m.

Mission Summary:

N42RF landed back at MacDill AFB at ~9:45 PM after flying a NESDIS Ocean Winds experiment and AXBT deployment mission into Hurricane Ivan and over the North Central Gulf of Mexico. HRD scientists Joe Cione and Paul Leighton were on-board this flight, along with Paul Chang and his NESDIS crew and Penn State meteorology professor Jenni Evans. The plane departed MacDill at 1 p.m. EDT Wednesday afternoon and landed back at MacDill around 9 p.m.. The aircraft is deploying AXBTs to determine the upper ocean thermal structure over the same Gulf region surveyed and sampled yesterday ahead of the storm's track. Joe Cione reported that the SST ahead of Ivan was ~25° C, as was the air temperature.
