Annual Report 1997

1. Committee Meetings

Held 20 May 1997, in conjunction with the committee's conference
Recommendations/suggestions:
• The AMS wish to recognize ``25 Years of GATE'' at the 1999 annual meeting was agreed upon. This will be a focus of the 1999 topical meeting in Dallas.
•  Meeting locations/dates were decided (see below).
•  No need for a committee Website was seen.
•  Will request $1500 ``meeting expenses'' for all future conferences, primarily for student travel support.
2. AMS Scientific/Technical Meetings arranged or sponsored.

The 22nd Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference was held in Fort Collins, CO, in May 1997. It was a great success, drawing the largest collection of papers this conference has seen. Dr Hugh Willoughby chaired the program committee.
3.  Proposed Future AMS Scientific/Technical Meetings
• Experimental workshop format will be invoked for the ``Tropical Cyclone Intensity'' workshop to be held in conjunction with the Weather and Forecasting Conference at the 1998 AMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ.
•  Dr Hugh Willoughby (HRD/AOML/NOAA) is coordinating this meeting.
•  Move the next (23rd) Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference so that it is held in conjunction with the 1999 AMS Annual Meeting in Dallas, TX.
•  A number of joint sessions are being arranged with other conference committees. Thus far, joint sessions with Hydrology and Boundary Layer and Turbulence have been firmed up.
•  The program committee for this 1999 meeting (the 23rd Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference) is Jenni Evans (Penn State), Chris Landsea (HRD/AOML/NOAA) and Lixion Avila (NHC/NWS/NOAA). This may be the final committee, but we are presently seeking one further committee member, possibly local to Texas.
4. Notes on other committee activities

Both the Max Eaton student prize and the Banner Miller Award (for most outstanding paper in tropical meteorology over the last four years) were presented at the 22nd Hurricanes and Tropical Meteorology Conference, Fort Collins, CO.
5.  Recommendations/problems/issues Jenni Evans has requested some AMS monetary support to assist in preparation of a historical ``retrospective'' for the 1999 meeting.
