UOTC Technology Development
Developing, testing and implementing new technology in upper ocean observing
networks is a primary goal of the UOTC. Currently the UOTC has three projects
involving new technologies:
- Shipboard Thermosalinographs are hull mounted sensors
that record sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface salinity (SSS).
Though not new to the research community, UOTC is currently testing them with
the VOS fleet to determine their role in the observation network.
- XBT Autolaunchers decrease demands on
VOS crews and improve reliability of XBT observations.
- PALACE Floats provide information on subsurface
currents and upper ocean temperature profiles. UOTC, in conjuction with the
ACCE project, is evaluating
the potential of these instruments in the UOT observation network.
